I will poke the bear of my previous home state of 11'ish years. I would like Brantley's opinion on this news posting from Sep 30, 2022. While C2 bingo marchines are not a "slot machine" as the draconian lawmakers have stated, it is gambling. Anyone who has ever lived in Alabama a day knows that there are three things that don't go together in Alabama; religion, alcohol, and gambling (besides dog racing, and the 2 or 3 C2 native american casinos). Five things if you include Alabama and Auburn University, but that is besides the point. Alabama loses lots of money on the lack of in-state lottery and the fuel purchased out of state for those travelling out of the state to get lottery tickets. Maybe as things turn "greener" in Alabama, those who hold power will also let loose the reins on gambling. I don't think that it will happen in my lifetime, but maybe a 100 or so years from now.

"The Alabama Supreme Court today ruled against “electronic bingo” operations in Lowndes and Macon counties, overturning lower courts that had denied the state’s requests to shut down the casinos.

The justices, in 9-0 rulings, ordered the courts in Lowndes and Macon counties to issue injunctions within 30 days blocking the use of the machines at VictoryLand in Macon County and at White Hall and Southern Star casinos in Lowndes County.

The rulings by the all-Republican court were consistent with previous rulings in the long-running legal dispute over whether the machines, which look and play similar to slot machines, are “electronic bingo” or illegal gambling devices.

Voters in both counties approved constitutional amendments allowing bingo. Officials in the counties maintain that the games are not only legal but are an important source of jobs and revenue for public services in communities with limited opportunity. Officials also note they are the same machines used at the three casinos operated by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Alabama. Alabama tried to shut those down, too, but federal courts ruled the state had no jurisdiction over the Indian casinos.

The Alabama Supreme Court has defined bingo as the traditional game in which players listen for numbers called out at random and mark their cards. The “electronic bingo” machines do not meet that definition of traditional bingo, the court reiterated in today’s rulings.

Attorney General Steve Marshall filed lawsuits in 2017 seeking an injunction against the machines and an order declaring that they are illegal gambling and a public nuisance.

“The Alabama Supreme Court’s opinion makes clear what my office has maintained from the start: these gambling enterprises are not only patently illegal under Alabama law, but also a menace to public health, morals, safety, and welfare,” Marshall said in a press release today. “Today’s decision will forbid the Southern Star, White Hall, and Victoryland casinos from offering their slot-machine gambling to the public.”

Marshall also challenged electronic bingo operations in Greene, Houston, and Morgan counties.

In today’s rulings, the justices said lower courts had erred in denying the state’s requests to shut down operations in Lowndes and Macon counties.

“Accordingly, we reverse their orders and remand these cases for the Macon Circuit Court to enter an order, within thirty days of this Court’s issuance of the certificate of judgment, preliminarily enjoining the Macon County defendants, and for the Lowndes Circuit Court to enter an order, within thirty days of this Court’s issuance of the certificate of judgment, permanently enjoining the Lowndes County defendants, from offering ‘electronic bingo’ machines at any facility in their respective county, from receiving any moneys in relation to ‘electronic bingo’ machines in operation in their respective county,” Associate Justice Greg Shaw wrote. The other eight justices concurred."
